3/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/4 c. molasses
2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
2 1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. ginger
3/4 tsp. cloves
1 c. raisins

Mix all ingredients together thoroughly. Press evenly over ungreased jelly roll pan or shape in rolls 1 inch in diameter on cookie sheet. Sprinkle lightly with sugar. Bake 9 minutes at 375 degrees. The Hermits will look soft but they become chewy as they cool. When cool, cut in bars.
