2 c. white sugar
3 tbsp. white Karo
3 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. broken pecans
1/2 c. coconut (optional)
Pinch of salt

Add soda to buttermilk and stir thoroughly. Add sugar, Karo and butter. Stir over medium flame until sugar is dissolved. Cook to soft ball stage. Remove from flame. Add vanilla and pinch of salt. Beat until slightly thickened. Add nuts and beat until consistency of fudge. Drop by teaspoonfuls on waxed paper. If coconut is added, do it with nuts. Use large, deep pan as mix boils over easily.
