This recipe is in my great-grandmother's handwriting (Mrs. John Bonstein, 1880). Mrs. John Bonstein's paternal grandfather, James Bovard, enlisted in Captain Kilgore's Company (Pennsylvania) and was discharged as a lieutenant in 1779. Her maternal grandfather, John Brobst, fought at Brandywine at age 18 as a private scout. John Bonstein was a descendant of Jacob Bonstein I, who fought in the American Revolution.
