2 c. dried apples 2 c. molasses 1 lb. chopped raisins 1/2 lb. citron 3 eggs 1/2 c. butter 3 c. flour 1 tbsp. cinnamon 1 tbsp. cloves 1 tsp. baking soda Soak apples overnight. Chop fine and cook moderately 1 hour in molasses. When cold, add all ingredients with soda dissolved in hot water. Bake 2 hours in a moderate oven. When done, invite Lottie over to tea. This recipe is in my great-grandmother's handwriting (Mrs. John Bonstein, 1880). Mrs. John Bonstein's paternal grandfather, James Bovard, enlisted in Captain Kilgore's Company (Pennsylvania) and was discharged as a lieutenant in 1779. Her maternal grandfather, John Brobst, fought at Brandywine at age 18 as a private scout. John Bonstein was a descendant of Jacob Bonstein I, who fought in the American Revolution. |
