COCOA BROWNIES 
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening (like Crisco)
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2/3 c. all purpose flour
1/2 c. cocoa
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix sugar, shortening, eggs, and vanilla. Stir in remaining ingredients. Spread in well greased 8 x 8 x 2 baking pan. Bake until wood pick inserted in center comes out clean, about 25 to 30 minutes. Cool. Cut in 1 inch squares. (When cool, gently pat down top. Top raises slightly during baking. When patted down, the brownies become more "chewey", less crumbly. I usually do this before cutting.) Yield: about 4 dozen.
