OATMEAL TOFFEE 
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 c. sifted flour
1 c. oatmeal
2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. semi-sweet chocolate bits
1/2 c. sliced walnuts (optional)

Blend sugar and brown sugar in medium bowl. Add softened shortening. Blend well and add eggs. Add flour, then oats and vanilla and salt. Spread in a greased 7 x 11 or 9 x 9 inch pan and bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

Melt chocolate bits over boiling water. Spread chocolate gently with spatula over toffee hot from the oven. Sprinkle evenly with sliced walnuts. Cool thoroughly before slicing.
