GRANDMA'S DATE FILLED COOKIES
(1959)
 
1 c. Spry (Crisco)
1 c. sugar
1 c. brown sugar
3 eggs
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda

FILLING:

1 lb. dates, cut fine
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. water
1 c. nuts

Cook dates, sugar and water together until thick. Add 1 cup nuts. Cool; spread on dough, rolled thin. Roll as a jelly roll, chill and slice. Bake 10-12 minutes at 350 degrees. "A West Virginia recipe from my great grandmother."
