APPLE BARS
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening
1 egg yolk

Combine flour and salt. Cut in shortening. Beat egg yolk in measuring cup and add enough milk to make 2/3 cup. Mix well. Stir into flour mixture.

On floured surface, roll half of the dough to a 17 x 12 inch rectangular shape. Fit into and up the sides of a pan, 1 1/2 inches smaller and 1 inch deep. 13 x 9 inch pan will do.

TOPPING:

1 c. cornflakes
8-10 tart apples, pared and sliced thin to equal 8 c.
3/4 to 1 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 egg white

Sprinkle with cornflakes, top with sliced apples. Combine sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over the apples. Roll the remaining dough to cover the apples. Seal edges and cut slits in the top. Bake at 375 degrees for 50 minutes.

Beat the egg white until frothy and brush over the crust. Combine 1 cup powdered sugar and 3 to 4 teaspoons of milk. Drizzle over the top of bars when they are removed from the oven.
