1 lb. dates
1 c. nuts
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. water

Cook until smooth.

COOKIE DOUGH:

1 c. shortening
2 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
4 c. flour

Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs and vanilla. Sift together soda, baking powder, salt and flour and add to creamed mixture. Roll out dough on waxed paper, spread date mixture on top, roll dough up and chill until firm. Slice and bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes.
