1 c. flour
1/2 c. salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. water
1 tbsp. cooking oil
Food coloring (opt.)

Add the food coloring to the water. Then mix all the ingredients in a heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture pulls away from the sides of the pan is not sticky.

Remove the mixture from the heat. Knead the dough (this is a step that your child may enjoy.) Store the play dough in a plastic bag or container. A can may be used for a rolling pin. Cookie cutters, plastic knives and forks add to the fun.
