BUTTERMILK POUND CAKE 
2 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. Crisco shortening
5 eggs
3 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. boiling water
2 tsp. lemon flavoring OR 1 tsp. vanilla and 1 tsp. almond flavoring

Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs one at a time, beat well. Sift dry ingredients (except soda) together. Add to sugar mixture alternating with buttermilk. Add soda dissolved in water and flavoring. Bake in tube pan at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until wooden toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.
