OMA'S BROWN SUGAR CAKE 
2 1/2 c. flour
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. butter or shortening
3/4 c. chopped nuts
1 egg, unbeaten
1 c. sour milk or buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix flour, white and brown sugar, chopped nuts and butter well. Mix by hand. Separate and set aside 1 cup of this mixture for later use.

To the large bowl of dry ingredients add the baking soda, egg, buttermilk and vanilla. Continue to mix by hand until smooth. Pour into greased and floured pans. Sprinkle reserved cup of dry mixture on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes for 8 1/2 x 11 inch pan or 40 minutes for 2 (9 inch) round pans.
