FRONTIER BUTTERMILK CAKE 
3 c. sugar, reserve 3/4 c. to use in egg whites
1 c. butter or shortening
5 eggs, separated
3 c. flour
1/3 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 1/4 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream 2 1/4 cups sugar with butter. Add beaten egg yolk and blend. Sift flour with soda and salt. Mix into batter alternately with milk. Beat egg whites with 3/4 cup sugar until stiff and fold into batter. Add vanilla. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour 15 minutes.
