GRANDMA'S CHOCOLATE CAKE 
1 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
2 1/2 c. flour
1 c. buttermilk
1/2 c. cocoa
2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. hot water

In large bowl, cream shortening, sugar, salt and vanilla. Add eggs and beat with mixer until light and creamy. Add flour and buttermilk alternately, beating 2 minutes.

In a small bowl, mix cocoa, soda and hot water. Add to batter and mix well. Bake in 350 degree oven until done in center. This will make three 8-inch layers.

GLOSSY CHOCOLATE FROSTING:

2 c. sugar
2 c. water
6 tbsp. cornstarch
4 oz. semi-sweet chocolate
2 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Cook first 4 ingredients over medium heat until thick, then add butter and vanilla.
