SIMPLE CHOCOLATE CAKE 
4 tbsp. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 (1 oz.) sq. unsweetened chocolate
1 1/2 c. cake flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sour milk (add 1 1/3 tbsp. vinegar to sweet milk)

Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and vanilla. Beat well. Add melted chocolate and mix. Add dry ingredients, alternately with sour milk. Grease cake pan and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.

Let cake cool and frost with Buttercream Frosting.

Buttercream Frosting:

5 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk
1/2 lb. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. powdered sugar

Cook together the flour and milk until thick, stirring constantly. Cool. Cream the butter, vanilla and powdered sugar together until whip cream consistency. Add flour mixture. Beat well. Spread on cake. Keep cake refrigerated.
