BROWN BREAD 
1 1/2 c. buttermilk
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. thick molasses or sorghum
4 c. whole wheat flour
1 c. raisins

Mix buttermilk, soda and salt. Add molasses, then flour and mix well. Add raisins if desired. Pour into well greased coffee cans filling 2/3 cup full. Set in boiling water. Let water come within 1 1/2" of top of can. Boil about 2 hours. Test done with toothpick.
