CZECH PLUM KUCHEN
1/2 c. lukewarm milk
1/2 tsp. sugar
1 (1 oz.) cake yeast
2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1/4 lb. sweet butter
2 tbsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
Rind of 1 lemon
Blue plums
Ground poppy seed

Into the lukewarm milk, add the 1/2 teaspoon sugar, crumble the yeast into this and let it raise.

With your fingers, crumble butter into sifted flour. Add the 2 tablespoons sugar, salt, egg yolks and lemon rind. Add milk mixture. Mix well to make a medium stiff dough. Divide into 2-3 parts and spread to cover the bottom of a pie plate or baking dish, allowing 1/2-inch rim. Let rise 1/2 hour.

Wash blue plums; dry; cut in half and remove stones. Prepare a mixture of 1/2 to 1 cup dry, ground poppy seed with sugar to taste. Place plums, cut in half, on the raising dough, with cut side up as close together as you like. Cover plums with poppy seed and sugar mixture, dab with pieces of butter. Bake in a 350°F oven for 25 minutes.

Streusel may be substituted for the poppy seed and sugar topping.
