FRESH APPLE CAKE 
2 c. sugar
1 c. shortening or butter
4 eggs
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 c. water
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. nuts, chopped
2 c. fresh apples, chopped fine or ground on food grinder

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time. Add flour alternately with water. Add spices, salt, soda and vanilla. Add apples and nuts. Mix well. Makes three 9-inch layers. May be baked in loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Frost between layers, on top and sides with either butter cream or cream cheese frosting.
