CHRISTMAS FRUIT CAKE 
1 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1 c. seeded raisins
1 1/4 c. water
1/2 c. Crisco
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. nuts (more if desired)
1/2 c. cherries (red candied)

Boil sugar, raisins, spices, shortening and water for 5 minutes and chill. Sift flour, soda, baking powder and salt together. Stir into first mixture. Bake in moderate oven at 350 degrees for 55-60 minutes in a greased tube pan.
