DATE FILLED COOKIES 
1 c. soft shortening
1/2 c. water or buttermilk
1/3 tsp. cinnamon
2 eggs
2 c. brown sugar, packed
3 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

FOR FILLING:

2 c. dates, cut small
3/4 c. water
3/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. chopped nuts

For cookie dough mix well shortening, sugar and eggs. Stir in water and vanilla. Sift together and stir in flour, soda, salt and cinnamon.

For filling cook until thick the dates, sugar and water. Add nuts and cool. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Drop by teaspoon dough on cookie sheet; drop 1/2 teaspoon date filling on top of dough. Then drop 1/2 teaspoon of dough on top of filling. Bake 10 minutes.
