BATTER BREAD 
1/2 c. cornmeal
1 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. sugar
1 egg
2 c. buttermilk
About 1/4 c. melted shortening

Coat 8 inch iron skillet with melted shortening. Preheat oven to 400 to 425 degrees. Put skillet in oven until shortening is hot. Mix all ingredients well. Pour into hot skillet. Bake 1/2 hour or until lightly browned.

Makes about 8 wedges.
