OLD FASHIONED APPLE DUMPLINGS 
2 c. sifted flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
2/3 c. milk
6 baking apples
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 c. red hot cinnamon candies
1 tbsp. butter

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening. Stir in milk and mix until soft dough is formed. Turn onto lightly floured board and knead gently. Roll to 1/8 inch thick; cut into 6 squares. Core and peel apples and place on each square.

Mix salt, sugar, cinnamon and candies together; sprinkle into center of each apple. Dot each with 1/2 teaspoon butter. Moisten edges of dough; press corner up over apples. Brush with milk. Place in a greased 13x9 inch baking pan. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees in an electric oven. Serve with sweet sour sauce.

SWEET SOUR SAUCE:

2 c. water
1/4 c. red hot cinnamon candies
1/3 c. vinegar
1/3 c. butter
1/3 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. nutmeg

In a 2 quart saucepan, combine water, candies, vinegar and butter; heat on high. Combine flour, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg together. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of the hot liquid mixture and stir to make a sauce. Gradually stir flour mixture into remaining liquid; reduce heat to medium and cook until thickened and candy has dissolved stirring constantly. Pour warm sauce over apple dumplings. Makes approximately 2 cups.
