DATE BARS 
1 1/2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. quick oats
1 c. butter, melted
1 c. chopped walnuts

FILLING:

1 lb. dates
1 c. water
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Sift together flour, soda and salt. Mix with sugar, oats, butter and walnuts, until mixture is crumbly. Press 1/2 into 9 x 12 x 2 inch pan.

Cook dates, water and sugar stirring constantly until thick. Add vanilla. Stir well and cool. Spread over pressed crumb layer and top with remaining crumb mixture. Bake at 325 degrees for 35 minutes. Cool and cut in squares.
