4 egg yolks, slightly beaten 1/2 c. sugar 1/2 c. hot water 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 c. cold water 1 envelope unflavored gelatin 4 egg whites, stiffly beaten 1/2 c. sugar 1 tsp. grated nutmeg 2 tsp. rum or rum flavor extract 1 baked pie shell A silver coin is hidden in this cake and at midnight a ceremony is held to begin the New Year. The person who finds the coin in his slice will be blessed with good fortune and good health for the coming year. The bread or cake baked for this occasion is in honor of St. Basil on his nameday. You may bake a bread or a cake as you desire. |
