APPLE SQUARES 
1 1/2 c. rolled oats
1 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 c. (1 1/2 sticks) butter
1/2 c. chopped walnuts
3 c. sliced tart apples
Mix together: 1/2 c. sugar and 1 tsp. cinnamon

Mix the first 5 ingredients with butter as for pie crust. Add the chopped nuts. Press half of the crumb mixture into a 11x7x2 inch pan. Top with apples making an even layer. Dot with 2 tbsp. butter and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon mixture. Cover with the other half of crumb mixture and press down firmly with fork. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Cool and cut into squares. Serve hot or cold.
