DEVIL'S FOOD COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening
2 oz. unsweetened chocolate
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. buttermilk
1 1/2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped nuts
1 c. milk chocolate chips

Melt shortening and chocolate in saucepan. Cool 10 minutes. Stir in sugar. Beat in egg, vanilla, and buttermilk. Sift together dry ingredients and add to chocolate. Stir in nuts and chocolate pieces. Drop from teaspoon on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees about 10 minutes. Remove from pan, cool, and frost.

FROSTING:

1/4 c. butter
Dash salt
2 1/2 c. sifted powdered sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
Approximately 3 tbsp. milk

Cream butter, salt and powdered sugar; add vanilla and enough milk for spreading consistency.
