RAT KRAUT 
6 peppercorns
2 whole allspice
2 whole cloves
1 bay leaf
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
Dash of pepper
2 medium cooking apples, sliced
1 medium head red cabbage, shredded
1 medium onion sliced
1 tbsp. bacon grease
3 tbsp. corn starch
3/4 c. white vinegar

Tie spices in cheesecloth bag. Put 1 1/2 cups water, sugar, bag of spices, salt, pepper, apples, cabbage and onion in pot and cook 15 minutes or until cabbage is tender crisp. Take out spice bag. Add bacon grease, blend corn starch and vinegar and stir in cabbage.
