HAMBURGER BEAN SOUP 
1 c. Navy beans
3 qts. water
1 lb. hamburger
1 tbsp. shortening
1 (No. 2) can tomatoes
2/3 c. celery, diced
1 carrot, diced
1 potato, cubed
1/4 c. rice, uncooked
1 lg. onion
1 sm. clove garlic, diced
1 tsp. instant bouillon (beef)
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper

Bring beans and water to a boil and cook 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let beans plump in water for 10 minutes, then simmer for 30 minutes. Brown hamburger in shortening. To the beans, add hamburger, tomatoes, celery, carrot, rice, onion, garlic, bouillon, salt and pepper. Bring to boil. Cover and simmer 1 hour. Serves 6.
