BROWN BEEF STEW 
1 1/2 lbs. stew beef
1 tsp. salt
3 tbsp. oil or shortening
1 lg. onion, stuck with 3 cloves
1 bay leaf
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
12 sm. onions (or cut up onion)
1/2 c. celery
Mushrooms, canned or fresh
1/4 c. flour
1/8 tsp. pepper
1/8 tsp. paprika
1 clove garlic, minced
2 c. beef stock
4 med. potatoes, cut up
6 med. carrots, chunked
1/2 c. peas

Roll meat in flour, salt, pepper and paprika mixture. Brown in hot oil. Add onion, garlic, bay leaf, beef stock, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer, covered 1 to 1 1/2 hours until meat is almost tender. Add potatoes, simmer 15 minutes; add onions and carrots, simmer 15 minutes. Add celery, mushrooms and peas; simmer 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Serves 4 to 6.
