CHOCOLATE DATE CAKE 
1 c. dates, chopped
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
1 3/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. semi-sweet chocolate bits
1 c. hot water
2/3 c. shortening
2 eggs, unbeaten
1 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Combine dates, hot water, baking soda and set aside. Blend shortening with sugar. Add eggs, beat until light and fluffy. Add date mixture alternately with sifted, dry ingredients. Stir in vanilla, 1/2 of chocolate bits and half the nuts.

Pour into greased 9 x 13 x 2 inch pan. Sprinkle remaining chocolate bits and nuts on top of batter. Bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes. Needs no frosting, travels well, and stays moist several days.
