APPLESAUCE DATE CAKE 
2 c. unsifted, all-purpose flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. brown sugar, packed
2 c. hot applesauce
3/4 c. coarsely chopped walnuts
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
2 tsp. baking soda
2 eggs
1/2 c. butter
1 c. chopped dates

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 9 x 9 x 2 inch pan. In large bowl, sift all dry ingredients. Add eggs, sugar, butter and 1 cup applesauce. Beat at low speed of electric mixer, just until ingredients are combined.

At medium speed, beat 2 minutes longer, occasionally scraping sides of bowl. Add remaining applesauce, dates and walnuts. Beat additional 1 minute. Pour into prepared pan. Bake 50 to 60 minutes or until well done. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then remove and cool on wire rack.

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING:

3 oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened
1 tbsp. soft butter
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. sifted powdered sugar

In large bowl, combine cream cheese, butter, vanilla and beat at low speed until smooth and fluffy. Gradually add sugar. Continue beating at medium speed until fluffy. Ice cake.
