CRUNCHY OATMEAL FUDGE SQUARES 
OATMEAL LAYER:

1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1/2 c. nuts
3/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 c. quick rolled oats

Cream shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla. Sift in dry ingredients. Add oats and nuts. Reserve 1 cup for topping. Press remaining mixture in 9 inch square pan.

FUDGE LAYER:

1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
1 tbsp. shortening
1/3 c. sweetened condensed milk
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. nuts
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine chocolate, shortening, milk and salt in saucepan. Place over low heat, stir until chocolate is melted. Stir in nuts and vanilla. Press evenly over oatmeal layer in pan. Crumble remaining oatmeal mix over fudge layer. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool and cut into 1 1/2 inch squares.
