OLD - TIME BEEF STEW 
Serves 6 to 8.

2 tbsp. fat
2 lb. beef chuck (1 1/2 inch cubes)
1 med. onion, sliced
1 clove garlic
6 to 7 c. boiling water
1 tbsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. paprika
1 or 2 bay leaves
Dash allspice or cloves
6 carrots, 2 inch pieces
1 lb. sm. white onions
6 med. potatoes, cubed

Heat fat in Dutch oven. Brown meat.

Add sliced onion, garlic on toothpick, boiling water, salt, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, paprika, bay leaf and allspice or cloves.

Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours. Stir now and then.

Remove bay leaf and garlic. Add vegetables.

Cover and simmer about 30 to 45 minutes longer or until everything is tender.
