DUTCH APPLE SLICES
1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. butter (1/2 stick)
1/3 c. milk
1 egg, beaten
6 lg. tart cooking apples
1/2 c. butter (1 stick)
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in 1/4 cup butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Combine milk and egg; stir into flour mixture. Dough will be stiff. On lightly floured surface roll dough to measure 14 x 10 inches. Fit into 13 x 9 x 2 inch buttered baking pan, turning up 1/2 inch on sides of pan. Core and slice apples, pare if you prefer. Arrange slices, overlapping each other, in rows; press into dough. Bake in preheated 425 degree oven for 25 minutes. Meanwhile melt 1/2 cup butter; stir in sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Remove cake from oven; spoon butter-sugar mixture over top. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees. Return pan to oven and bake an additional 20 minutes. Cool on wire rack; cut into rectangles. Makes 12 servings.
