BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
6 lbs. cucumbers, sliced
1 1/4 c. sliced onion
2 lg. garlic cloves
2 qts. ice cubes (about 40)
1/3 c. salt
4 3/4 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. turmeric
1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
2 tbsp. mustard seed
3 c. white vinegar

Slice unpeeled cucumbers, cut up onion and garlic in bottom of a large pan or roaster pan. Add salt and mix well. Cover with ice cubes. Let stand 3 hours. Drain and remove garlic.

Combine sugar, spices and vinegar. Heat to boiling then add cucumber and onion slices. Boil another 5 minutes. Pack in jars, loosely. Seal.
