MOM'S BEAN SOUP 
Mix 1 pound each of various dried beans (any kind but black beans). Use 1 cup for this recipe. Serves 6 to 8.

1 c. dried beans
2 tbsp. salt
1 lg. chopped onion
27 oz. can tomatoes
1/2 to 1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 bay leaf
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 lb. smoked sausage, sliced or 1 lb. ham, diced

Wash beans. Cover with water and add salt. Soak overnight, then rinse. Add 1 quart water and bring to boil. Simmer until beans are soft (at least 1 hour). Puree in blender and return to pot. Add remaining ingredients and bring to boil. Simmer 10 to 15 minutes and serve.
