GREAT GRANDMA'S FAVORITE SOAP RECIPE | |
SOAP MADE OF CRACKLINGS: Fry diced hog fat skin in a deep kettle to contain spatters to make the cracklings. 2 tbsp. lye 2 qt. water, soft or hard Boil until cracklings are dissolved. Then cool or until grease comes to the top. Remove fat (lard). SOAP RECIPE: To 5 pounds lard, use 1 can lye, 1 quart water. When cool, add 3 tablespoons Borax dissolved in 1/2 cup water and 1-3 teaspoons ammonia. Be careful with the lye! All vegetables grown under the ground should be put on to cook with cold water. And everything grown above the ground should be put on with hot water. Bread crumbs added to scrambled eggs not only improve the flavor but make larger servings possible. Save celery leaves and dry thoroughly. Use to flavor soups. For croup: Crushed or powdered alum and honey. |
