1 yeast cake 1/2 c. sugar 1 tsp. salt 3/4 c. melted shortening (melt, measure, cool a little) 1 c. lukewarm water 3 eggs 4 c. unsifted flour Dissolve yeast in water; add eggs, shortening, flour and salt; mix well. Put in refrigerator, covered with foil, overnight. Make dough into little balls and roll in cinnamon sugar. Cover bottom of well buttered pan with little balls, sprinkle with chopped maraschino cherries, dates and nuts. Sprinkle with melted butter. Layer again with balls, cherries, nuts, etc., ending with dough balls. (Refrigerate if desired.) Let bread rise for 1 hour, then bake at 325 degrees for about 1 hour. Use approximately 1/2 jar cherries, 1 box dates, 3/4 cup nuts and 1 1/2 sticks butter for layering. Bread may be refrigerated at this point for 3 to 4 days, just be sure to allow the dough to rise for one hour prior to baking. |
