GRANDMA'S CHOCOLATE BIRTHDAY CAKE | |
4 squares melted chocolate 2 tsp. baking soda 1 c. boiling water 1 c. milk plus 1 tbsp. vinegar 1/2 c. butter 1/2 tsp. salt 2 c. sugar 4 eggs 3 c. flour 2 tsp. baking powder 2 tsp. vanilla Melt chocolate. Stir chocolate with 3/4 cup of the boiling water until thick. Mix the remaining 1/4 cup boiling water with the baking soda and add to the chocolate while the baking soda is still fizzing. Set aside to cool. Put the vinegar in the milk and set aside. Stir when ready to add to batter. Cream together the butter, salt, sugar, and eggs. Sift the baking powder and flour together and add alternately with sour milk to the creamed mixture. Stir in the vanilla then add the chocolate and blend well. Put into two 9 inch greased and lightly floured pans and bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes until a cake test comes out clean. Frost with butter cream frosting. |
