3 c. flour
2 c. sugar
3/4 c. shortening
1/2 tsp. each cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg

Mix above ingredients and set aside 1/2 cup for topping. Mix 2 cups buttermilk, 2 teaspoons baking soda and 1 teaspoon salt. Add to first mixture. Sprinkle topping over pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
