GRANDMA'S SUGAR COOKIE
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. shortening
1 c. sour milk
2 eggs
1 tsp. salt
1/4 c. water
1 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. lemon
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
5 1/4 c. flour

Cream white and brown sugar with shortening and eggs. Stir in sour milk (2 tablespoons vinegar with milk to make 1 cup). Add nutmeg, baking powder, lemon, vanilla, and stir in. Mix salt and soda in 1/4 cup of water and stir in. Stir in flour (3 cups) until smooth and add remainder of flour. Dough will be fairly stiff.

Refrigerate for 1 hour. Roll out dough on generously floured board and cut into desired shapes. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes only until cookies begin to turn a golden color. Remove to cool. Baking too long will make cookies hard.
