BREAD & BUTTER PICKLES 
4 qts. cucumbers, sliced
8 med. onions, sliced
1/2 c. salt
4 c. vinegar
3 1/2 c. sugar
2 tbsp. turmeric
1 1/2 tbsp. mustard seed
1 tbsp. celery seed

Put first three ingredients in large container, cover with ice cubes. Let stand and soak for 3 1/2 hours. Then drain.

Mix next 5 ingredients together and bring to boil. Add cucumbers and onions. Cook until heated, then pack into jars.

Yellow summer squash may be used instead of cucumbers if you choose.
