OATMEAL SQUARES 
1/4 c. butter
1 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/8 tsp. salt
3/4 c. oats
1/4 c. wheat germ
1 c. chopped walnuts

Melt butter and add brown sugar. Cool slightly and add beaten egg and vanilla. Sift flour, baking powder and salt into egg-butter mixture. Mix by hand and add oats, nuts and wheat germ.

Put into a greased 8-inch square pan and raise in the middle so it doesn't fold in on the sides. Bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes. If doubling the recipe, use 1 cup light and 1 cup dark sugar.
