WINTER APPLE-NUT BARS 
Use 13 x 9 x 1 3/4-inch baking dish, well greased.

2 c. whole wheat flour
1/4 c. toasted wheat germ
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
4 lg. tart cooking apples, peeled and diced
1 c. granulated sugar
1 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 c. vegetable oil
2 eggs, well beaten
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine flour, wheat germ, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. In a large bowl, combine apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, oil, nuts, eggs and vanilla. Add dry ingredients; stir gently until mixed.

Turn into prepared dish. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven or 50 minutes or until cake shrinks from sides of pan. Cool in pan on rack. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar if desired. Cut into 12 to 18 bars.
