2 1/4 c. flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sour milk
1/2 c. cocoa
1 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1/3 c. hot water

Sift flour, then measure and add soda, baking powder and salt. Cream shortening, add sugar gradually. Beat thoroughly after each addition. Add vanilla and well beaten egg. Beat in flour mixture alternately with milk. Mix cocoa and hot water. Beat into mixture.

Bake in moderate oven, 350 degrees.

To change to sweet milk: Add 1 tsp. baking powder and decrease soda to 1/3 tsp.
