MOLASSES SUGAR COOKIES 
3/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. molasses
1 egg
2 tbsp. baking soda
2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. salt

Melt shortening in a 3 or 4-quart pan over low heat. Remove from heat; allow to cool. Then add sugar, molasses and egg; beat well. Sift together flour, soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and salt. Add these to first mixture. Mix well and chill thoroughly.

Form into 1-inch balls; roll in granulated sugar and place on greased cookie sheets 2-inches apart. Bake in moderately hot oven at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Yield 4 dozen.
