APPLESAUCE-SPICE CAKE 
2 1/2 c. flour
2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 c. applesauce
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Oven at 350 degrees. Use Browned Butter Frosting (see below).

Grease and flour sheet cake pan or two 8 inch or 9 inch round pans. Beat all ingredients in large mixing bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, 30 seconds. Beat on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally 3 minutes. Pour into pan(s).

Bake until wooden pick comes out clean, 60-65 minutes for sheet cake, 50-55 minutes for layers. Cool layers 10 minutes, remove from pans. Cool completely before frosting.

BROWNED BUTTER FROSTING:

Heat 1/3 cup butter over medium heat until delicate brown. Mix 3 cups powdered sugar. Beat in 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla and about 2 tablespoons milk until smooth and of spreading consistency.
