MOTHER'S DATE NUT BREAD 
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. dates, cut up
1 c. boiling water
3/4 c. brown sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. shortening
1 egg
1 c. chopped pecans
1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour

Sprinkle soda over cut dates and pour the boiling water over both. Combine salt, sugar, shortening and egg. Add nuts, date mixture and sifted flour. Turn into greased pan and bake in slow 300 degree oven for 1 hour. Double for 4 small pans.
