AUNT MINNIE'S DATE-RAISIN SQUARES | |
1/2 c. shortening 1 c. sugar 1 egg 2 1/2 c. flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 c. sour milk (or more) 1 tsp. vanilla 1 (7 oz.) pkg. dates, chopped 3/4 c. raisins 1 c. chopped walnuts 1/8 c. sugar Cornstarch Cook dates, raisins, 1/2 cup walnuts, sugar and cornstarch in a little water until thick. Cool slightly. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and mix well. Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together. Add to creamed mixture, alternating with milk and vanilla. In a greased jelly roll pan spread a layer of the dough, then the date-raisin filling, then another layer of dough. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup nuts over top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. |
