STANDARD BUTTER CAKE 
1 c. butter or shortening
2 c. sugar
4 eggs
3 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt (if butter is not used)

Cream butter. Add sugar gradually and cream together well. Add well beaten yolks and cream until mixture is fluffy and lemon color. Mix and sift dry ingredients. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk to creamed fat and sugar. Add flavoring. Beat egg whites until they stand in peaks. Fold in beaten whites. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 25 minutes.
