APPLESAUCE DATE CAKE
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg, well beaten
2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/8 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1 c. chopped raisins
1 c. chopped dates
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1 c. applesauce, unsweetened

Cream sugar with shortening until fluffy. Add egg and beat well. Sift together flour, soda, salt and spices. Mix a little flour mixture with dates, raisins and nuts to keep them from sticking together. Add remaining flour mixture alternately with applesauce and beat well. Mix in floured date-raisin-nut mixture.

Bake in greased 8 inch square pan at 350 degrees about 45 minutes. Serve plain or frosted. Cake will remain moist for several days in a tightly covered container.
